The operas Cavalleria Rusticana (Rustic Chivalry) by Pietro Mascagni and Pagliacci (Travelling Players) by Ruggiero Leoncavallo have often been paired over the last 120 years. Cavalleria was a phenomenal success from its first performance in Rome in 1890. It has been performed more than 14,000 times in Italy alone! Cavalleria is set in a Sicilian village on an Easter Sunday. Turiddu has returned home from army service to find his love, Lola, married to Alfio. He woos Santuzza but then rejects her when Lola and he become lovers again. Lola's husband Alfio exacts murderous retribution. After seeing the success of Mascagni's "verismo" opera it seems Leoncavallo decided to create a similar tale of desire, faithlessness, deceit and retribution, set in a village environment with believable local people. His opera, Pagliacci, premiered at the New York Met in 1893. Pagliacci's tangled web of love takes the form of a play within a play. A commedia del'arte group is performing in a village. Canio, a player in the troupe, finds out his wife Nedda is having an affair and kills her and her lover on stage during the performance. Canio's bitter aria "Vesti la giubba" (Put on the costume) laments the fate of a performer whose heart is breaking, but he must don the costume and prepare to laugh. It is justly one of the most popular arias in opera repertoire.
