Despite being easily the most influential music of the 20th century, jazz is often considered difficult to understand. This six-week course will provide an introduction which will help you appreciate and enjoy it. The course will cover the history of jazz, including jazz in New Zealand and influences on other music. Learn how to listen and what to listen for. Develop your ear and join the global jazz revolution!

Target Audience:
This course is for anyone who wants to know more about jazz, whether you are a fan or not.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this course students will:
* have learned how jazz developed
* have an appreciation of different jazz styles
* have developed their listening skills
* be able to click their fingers on two and four, and more!

Course Outline:
Topics for this seminar series include:

Session 1 - Jazz histories, written and unwritten
Session 2 - Jazz in New Zealand (past and present and future)
Session 3 - "Opening" your ears
Session 4 - Mystery field trip
Session 5 - Reflections on the field trip
Session 6 - Play and tell


Course Format:
Two-hour seminars are held one evening a week over six weeks.

Tim Hopkins is a professional jazz musician who has worked in New York, Australia, Europe and New Zealand. Tim has been touring to promote his sixth album Here Now After.
