If you want to develop a focus on building personal strengths in your life, this is the course for you. It is based on a scientific approach to happiness and covers the theoretical background to positive psychology while providing practical strategies for achieving positive change in your life.
Positive psychology is a relatively new branch of psychology. It calls for a focus on strengths, an interest in building the best things in ourselves and attention to fulfilling the lives of healthy people.

Target Audience:
This course is for anyone who wants to develop a focus on building personal strengths and increase wellbeing in their lives.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this course, students will have:
* gained an understanding of the aim and scope of positive psychology
* developed an understanding of the difference between positive psychology and other theoretical principles in psychology
* acquired insight into their own strengths and virtues
* learnt strategies to increase their happiness and overall quality of life as a result of practising happiness-inducing techniques
* developed an understanding of the dimensions of subjective wellbeing and the application to their lives.

Course Outline:
Five interactive sessions include the following:

Introduction to positive psychology
- History
- Core concepts
The pleasant life
- "Subjective happiness": what it means
- Correlations and predictors of "subjective happiness"
- Strategies and their practical application
The good life
- Learning about the 24 signature strengths
- Identifying and amplifying your own unique strengths and skills
- Achieving "flow"
The meaningful life
- Participating in activities outside of the self, for the good of others and society

Course Format:
The course is designed to be theoretical as well as practical and interactive. It includes presentations, discussions of readings and the sharing of experiences. Students will be encouraged to do some work between sessions and integrate their experiences with their learning.

Class Limit:
This course is limited to a maximum of 16 participants.

Teacher:
Christoph Huelsmann is a clinical psychologist. He works part-time in private practice and as a clinical advisor for the Accident Compensation Corporation. He holds degrees in family therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy.
