An introductory level Maori language programme designed for adults seeking to use te reo in their workplace and everyday lives. You will learn simple sentence structures and phrases useful for addressing your clients, colleagues, friends and family. This course is guaranteed to get you talking!
Target Audience: Te Ara Tuatahi: Te Reo Maori 1 is suitable for all.
Learning Objectives: By the end of this course students will have learned to use te reo Maori with confidence to:
* Greet, acknowledge and farewell people using simple common phrases appropriate for both informal and formal settings * Join in powhiri or whakatau by introducing yourself with a simple formal mihimihi according to custom * Hold a short casual conversation with another person asking and answering questions relating to: o their wellbeing o the wellbeing of their family/friends/colleagues * Introduce yourself when answering the telephone * Communicate in the workplace to obtain specific information such as: o personal name/s o age and date of birth o address and contact numbers o name of organisation o job title * State numbers and quantities * State time and dates * Give currency figures, fees, and costings * Schedule meetings and invite attendees * Begin to understand formal speeches during the whakatau or powhiri process.
Course Outline: * Informal Greetings o Introducing yourself o Simple greetings, acknowledgements and farewells o Asking and responding to the question "How are you?" * Formal Greetings - Mihimihi: introducing yourself at a hui (meeting) - Meeting and introducing other people - Asking and saying where you live and work * Describing people or things o Job titles o Using adjectives o Asking and responding to the question "What is/are?" * Numbers o Counting objects and people o Ordinal numbers e.g. first, second, third o Currency figures, fees and costings o Metric sizing * Days, Time and Dates o Days of the week o Months of the year o Calendar dates o Asking and saying what time it is o Scheduling * Location nouns o Asking and responding to the question "Where is/are?" o Asking and responding to the location questions "What is/are?" o and "Who is/are?" * Describing actions o what someone is doing (present) o what someone did (past) * Kinship and Group Relationships o Kinship terms, e.g. mother, father o Possessives and the 'A' and 'O' categories o Connecting people: inclusive and exclusive linking pronouns/words o Family tree o Workplace structure
Course Format: The programme comprises 24 hours of classroom interactive group learning made up of 2-hour sessions over 12 weeks. In addition, self-directed learning of 1-2 hours a week is expected with homework activities to facilitate self-directed learning. Learning activities focus on listening, speaking, reading and writing te reo Maori. There is no formal assessment.
Required materials: A course workbook and audio CD will be provided.
Class Limit: This course is limited to a maximum of 20 participants.

Tania Te Whenua (Ngai Tuhoe) has a BA Maori Resource Management, and has taught te reo Maori at a tertiary level for many years. Tania is steeped in knowledge of tikanga Maori (Maori culture), te reo and the Treaty of Waitangi.
