This course builds on the basic skills gained in Te Ara Tuatahi: Te Reo Maori 1. The emphasis is on expanding your range of sentence structures, improving your vocabulary and increasing your oral competency and confidence.
The course focuses on useful Maori language for the workplace. It will give you the skills necessary to engage in basic communication in reo Maori and expand your awareness of Maori culture.
Target Audience: Te Ara Tuarua: Te Reo Maori 2 is suitable for people who have either completed Te Ara Tuatahi: Te Reo Maori 1 or have a post-beginners' level of reo competency. It is not designed for learners who have reached intermediate level.
Learning Objectives: By the end of this course students will have learned to use te reo Maori to:
* Greet, acknowledge and farewell people using phrases appropriate for both informal and formal settings * Join in powhiri or whakatau by introducing yourself with a formal mihimihi according to custom * Open and close written communications, both formal and informal * Hold a short casual conversation on a range of topics relevant to your workplace or personal life, using active verbal sentence structures with present, past and future tense markers * Organise a hui * Discuss an event * Begin to understand formal speeches during the whakatau or powhiri process * Improve your pronunciation
Course Outline: * Pronunciation * Mihimihi * Revision of numbers, dates, time * Revision of kinship terms * Possessives and the 'a' and 'o' categories * Giving instructions * Talking about actions: o who should do something o who will do something (future) o who did something (past) o what happened * Asking and responding to 'who has something' questions * Asking and responding to 'why' questions * Buying goods: o talking about prices o talking about quantities *Location and time * Describing a hui or event o where and when it was held o what happened o what it was like
Course Format: The programme comprises 24 hours of classroom interactive group learning made up of 2-hour sessions over 12 weeks. In addition, self-directed learning of 1-2 hours a week is expected with homework activities to facilitate self-directed learning. Learning activities focus on listening, speaking, reading and writing te reo Maori. There is no formal assessment.
Required materials: A course workbook and audio CD will be provided.
Class Limit: This course is limited to a maximum of 20 participants.

Tania Te Whenua (Ngai Tuhoe) has a BA Maori Resource Management, and has taught te reo Maori at a tertiary level for many years. Tania is steeped in knowledge of tikanga Maori (Maori culture), te reo and the Treaty of Waitangi.
