Overview:
Sport Psychology applies a scientific approach to people in sport and exercise contexts. This includes studying how psychological factors affect you or your team’s performance in sport and how participation in exercise and sport affects us. This course applies scientifically based thinking to strategies that can help coaches and athletes.

Target audience:
This course is for coaches and athletes (both amateur and professional).

Learning objectives:
By the end of this course, students will:
•understand the foundations and key principles of Sport Psychology
•understand cognitive–behavioural principles and how they apply to the athlete
•recognise individual factors such as motivation, stress, anxiety and reinforcement
•understand group processes and the ‘systemic perspective’ and how this can help individuals and teams
•know how to apply ‘psychological skills training’ to improve performance.

Course outline:

Module 1 provides a comprehensive introduction to the key principles of Sport Psychology. It aims to enhance students’ knowledge of the science, theories and application of interventions designed to enhance athletes’ performances.

Module 2 covers the cognitive–behavioural approach, that is, the theories and applications of cognitive and behavioural principles that apply to working with athletes.

Module 3 defines intrinsic factors, such as motivation, anxiety and stress, and provides an understanding of various theoretical models and their underpinnings. You will learn to develop approaches for building motivation and addressing anxiety and stress.

Module 4 explores the athlete’s environment, social psychology theories, systemic views and group processes.

Module 5 covers psychological skills training, such as goal theory and goal setting as well as ‘theories of motivation’, imagery, ‘mental training’ and emotional regulation skills.

Module 6 covers sports rehabilitation including health psychology theories and relates these to rehabilitation after injuries. You will gain an understanding of the role of pain and anxiety in rehabilitation.

Course format:
These two-hour sessions are held one evening a week over six weeks.
