In this course you will learn about the techniques and process of shooting a film on 16mm, from internationally acclaimed cinematographer and three-time Oscar winner Alex Funke. You will have the opportunity to operate the camera and shoot a short scene on 16mm film. The course will cover basic cinematography techniques and theory in addition to other production skills. You will participate in the entire process of film making and the course will result in a collaborative short film.
Target Audience: This course will be of interest to previous and current film students, individuals in the film and video industry, as well as anyone from the general public who has some prior knowledge of camera use and film production. This course is not suitable for beginners.
Learning Objectives: By the end of this course students will have:
* gained an understanding of the film medium and will have acquired the skills and knowledge of how to work with 16mm film stock * had a rare opportunity to work with this highly desirable medium * participated in the entire film production process and acquired camera, lighting and sound experience using film industry equipment.
Course Outline: The course will involve nine interactive workshop sessions with practical filming experience that will provide an introduction to film production and the 16mm format. Topics that will be covered include:
* roles and pre-production tasks; * exposure, focusing and shot selection; * sound and lighting; * the postproduction process; and * editing.
There will be application labs to provide hands-on experience with 16mm film and a full weekend of filming to produce a collaborative short film. Course Format: This course includes nine practical and interactive workshop sessions from Tuesdays 1 March to 3 May (excluding Tuesday 26 April) and a full-day weekend shoot on both Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 April.
Class Limit: This course is limited to a maximum of 14 participants. Places are limited, so please enrol early.

Dr Paul Wolffram has taught film production courses at Victoria University of Wellington since 2007. He has shot several documentaries and runs a film production business.
Alex Funke has been a cinematographer for over 30 years, doing effects for TV and feature films, specialising in miniatures. He has operated his own high-technology company, Precision Film Group, co-designed the first system ever built to provide rock-steady transfers of film to video, and helped develop the very first modern motion control system. Alex has received Oscars for Total Recall, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King, as well as BAFTA awards and VES awards. He is a member of the American Society of Cinematographers and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Born in the USA, and now a New Zealand citizen, Alex has lived here since 1999, when he first arrived to set up the miniatures photography unit for Lord Of The Rings. He currently teaches Honours film production at Victoria University and is director of cinematography at Weta miniatures.
