Course Outline:
Victoria Continuing Education is currently planning a study tour in Russia and the Baltic States (In the Footsteps of Peter the Great) to be run in September 2011. Details of the study tour are available at http://www.victoria.ac.nz/CCEShortcourses/Russia.aspx

This course will be of particular value to anyone who might be interested in the study tour, as well as those interested in Russian history in general. Over four lectures this course will examine:

Lectures 1 & 2: Russia and the Romanovs
The Romanov dynasty ruled Russia from 1613 until the Bolshevik Revolution 1917. Under the Romanovs autocratic rule continued right into the 20th century, ensuring that the personalities, caprices and energies of the Romanov tsars and tsaritsas left an indelible imprint on Russia. The first session of this course examines key figures and events during the Romanov period that have influenced modern Russia.

Lectures 3 & 4: An introduction to the Baltic States
The trio of small European nations, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, are not the only countries to border the Baltic Sea, yet for convenience they are often collectively termed the 'Baltic States'. Each has unique geographical, ethnic, linguistic and historical features that distinguish it from the other two, and from other countries in the region. This presentation will introduce the culture and history of the stalwart Baltic peoples who achieved, and later regained, independent nationhood in the 20th century.
