Overview: We are all seeking to be more effective—squeezing more out of tight budgets and balancing conflicting needs and priorities.
This course offers a structured approach to exploring options and finding creative solutions to a wide range of problems and dilemmas. Goldratt’s Theory of Constraints offers you a framework for (re)thinking processes, projects and issues to improve productivity, by challenging assumptions and opening up new avenues to improve performance with existing resources.
Who should attend: This course is aimed at middle or senior managers in public or private sectors. However, it will be of value to anyone who would like to learn a different way of solving problems and dilemmas and managing change in their professional worlds, day-to day lives, or within voluntary roles.
No previous knowledge of these methods is assumed, and but you do need to be prepared to be challenged to think differently, and practise using the methods if you want to get the most out of the seminar. The methods you’ll learn are surprisingly simple and straightforward once you know how—they are often described as common sense which is not commonly applied.
Learning objectives:
•Understand the crucial role of constraints and how they can be used more effectively •Identify conflicts and dilemmas and develop breakthrough solutions •Understand key behaviours that delay projects or block us from achieving goals, and learn how to avoid these •Learn how to turn resistance to change into a positive force for change •Appreciate the value of thinking holistically.
Course outline:
1. An introduction to Goldratt’s Theory of Constraints, and how to recognise and deal with bottlenecks and constraints.
2. Identifying what needs to change, and how to break conflicts and dilemmas using the Evaporating Cloud technique.
3. Planning to meet ambitious targets (using the Prerequisite Tree method).
4. Using concepts from Goldratt’s Critical Chain project management method for managing your workload.
5. Putting all this together, harnessing resistance to change.
Course format: The course is offered as two one-day workshops held two weeks apart.
In each session you will be introduced to new concepts and tools with opportunities for practical decision-making in groups using real examples, providing ideas to take away and apply.
