Personal productivity has superseded time management as a model for personal development. Traditional time management techniques have focussed on the setting and sequencing of priorities, but the world of business has changed. ‘Knowledge work’ has no clear boundaries, and frequently no clear outcomes. Change is relentless, information flow is vast, and jobs themselves have no constant reference point. The traditional time management model, with an emphasis on systems and priorities, simply cannot accommodate the complexity and rapidity of change inherent in those very priorities.

Personal productivity takes a radically different approach, by focusing not on managing time or priorities, but instead on the management and maximisation of actions in order to master workflow. The concepts covered in this workshop are consistent with current thinking on situated and embodied cognition as in ‘the extended mind’ (Clark & Chalmers, 1998), ‘feedback control’ (Heylighen & Joslyn, 2001), and with the positive psychology concept of ‘flow’ (Csikszentmihalyi, 1990).

This workshop synthesises best practice material from a variety of international programmes and publications. The core content, however, is an iteration of the GTD System®, the programme by David Allen in ‘Getting Things Done®’ (2001). The concepts are used as a framework for effective personal productivity that any person can customise to their own corporate and personal lifestyle, goals and values. Because it is a philosophy, and not a system, it can be simply adapted by the visual/tactile person into a hands-on paper-based system, or by the linear/digital person into an elegant electronic system. It is based on the premise that workflow management and personal productivity is an art that can be learned and mastered.

This workshop qualifies for NZ Trade and Enterprise’s Capability Development Voucher Scheme.

Roger Lewis successfully operated his own private financial advisory service for 25 years, and was the inaugural chairman and a director of Rutherford Rede, a national financial advisory practise specialising in wealth management services for high net worth clients. Add to the mix a busy family of four children, extensive other interests, and annual international speaking commitments, and he had to face and master his own perspective and performance skills as an absolute priority.

Many years of dealing with staff development and personal excellence standards within a burgeoning organisation developed an intense interest in the topic, and since 2010 Roger has operated his own Christchurch based training practice that specialises in Personal Efficacy. His work since has involved national roadshows for industry associations, in-house workshops for corporates, conference keynote addresses, and Masterclass presentations for training organisations and businesses. He enjoys helping people get to grips with their work purpose and direction (how to do the right things), and understanding their work processes and systems (how to do things right). He has a special skill in taking complex ideas and conveying them in a crisp and concise way, making them easy to understand and simple to apply, and believes that the principles of personal efficacy transcend gender, location, culture, creed, language, and industry sector.

Personal Efficacy lies in finding the nexus between the twin axes of control and perspective, between achievement and fulfilment, between efficiency and effectiveness. When the two are harmonised, people become truly efficacious. Roger facilitates a Nine-part Masterclass journey, which provides a learning experience to reach excellence in both axes. All sessions are grounded in academic research and represent best practise thinking.
