Course format: This course is held on 14 Saturdays and one Sunday.
We teach using Experiential Education, or learning by doing and active reflection. The course will also be supported by a series of presentations, online dialogue, and readings to dig deeper into the art, science and culture of sustainability and resilience.
The course is demanding and will be full on during the days we're in session. You can also expect ~ 1 hr of assignment work for every day of class, although the degree of challenge is really up to you. However, it is not advisable to take this course on while in the process of moving house or during some other life-changing event - we'll take care of that on-course!
Teacher: James Richardson is a Teaching Fellow at the School of Architecture, Victoria University, following a teaching career in Canada, New Zealand, and the United States, and training in Outdoor and Experiential Education. James has studied permaculture, natural building, biodynamic farming and brings to the course a deep understanding of the art and science of sustainability.
Course materials: We provide a robust online library of material. In addition, we recommend one of Bill Mollison's Introduction to Permaculture, Toby Hemmenway's Gaia's Garden or David Holmgren's Principles and Pathways Beyond Sustainability. However these texts are optional. We also ask students to purchase some writing materials (tracing paper, felt-tipped pens, etc). A list of these will be provided following registration.
