New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) is the language of the New Zealand Deaf community and was recognised as New Zealand's third official language in 2006.
This course introduces basic NZSL skills necessary for simple communication with Deaf people.
Target Audience: New Zealand Sign Language 1 is suitable for beginners who wish to gain an introduction to NZSL for personal or business reasons, or for personal study.
Learning Objectives: By the end of this course students will have:
* Learned basic grammar * Acquired knowledge about Deaf Culture and Deaf community * Developed awareness of NZSL communication behaviours * Developed basic receptive and expressive skills for everyday communication situations.
Course Format: This course comprises 24 hours of classroom interactive group learning made up of 2-hour sessions over 12 weeks. To reinforce your learning homework is encouraged. There is no formal assessment.
Required Materials: New Zealand Sign Language Student Videotext (or DVD) Units 1-6, and New Zealand Sign Language Student Workbook Units 1-6.

Class Limit: This course is limited to a maximum of 16 participants.
