Overview:
Develop your people management skills and get the best from your team.

Management in Action is about taking action and using what you learn. This programme of integrated workshops explores a number of key 'best practice' management techniques; how to manage our team, identify what we actually want them to do and why, and how we can make that happen. After each workshop you'll leave with a self-identified action plan to put into place over the next fortnight, and report back on at the next workshop.

The programme consists of four one-day workshops, a half-day conclusion session and a one-hour individual coaching session.

If your role requires you to manage people, this course is for you.

Who Should Attend:
The Management in Action Programme is specifically for new and less experienced people managers with direct reports. If you are looking at moving into a management position it will also provide you with skills and knowledge to enable this.

Learning Objectives:
At the end of this programme, you'll be able to:

•use your heightened awareness of your own management style and tendencies to identify the best strategies to deal with any situation
•build trust within the team and with you, as their manager
•set clear expectations for performance and monitor progress
•manage your team member's development, applying the appropriate style of direction and support
•identify and use appropriate communication skills for any situation
•have those difficult conversations with staff in a way that leaves you both feeling empowered
•give feedback that maintains self esteem and either reinforces effective behaviour or changes ineffective behaviour.

At the end of this programme you will have:

•a greater awareness of yourself as a manager - knowing your unique strengths and the areas you need to be mindful of
•a clear plan for yourself, as a manager, and a clear path for achieving those goals
•a more cohesive team with a clear purpose, goals, roles and responsibilities
•well-communicated and monitored performance expectations
•greater confidence in communicating with your team - whether one-on-one or as a group
•an enhanced ability to build trust and be trusting - essential in creating a high performing team.
Programme Topics:
The themes of the four workshops are:

•Managing yourself: find out your natural management style, what other options there are and how to adapt your style to best achieve your outcomes. Articulate your own goals as a manager and look at what it will take to achieve them.
•Managing communication: develop and practise your communication skills both in a group setting and one-on-one. Learn to recognise what communication skills are most appropriate for the situation. Use a simple planning process so that communications are well thought out and have a greater chance of success.
•Managing your team: map your whole team's behavioural styles, identify the strengths and challenges, and discuss how to best manage them. Clarify your team's purpose (why does it exist), its goals (what it needs to achieve) and the actions required to get there. Help your team members understand their roles and responsibilities and their part in the team's success.
•Managing performance: take time to think about each team member and their unique strengths and challenges. Discuss how to set in place the things you need to do to help each of them perform above expectation. Explore how you can adapt your management style to give the right kind of coaching and support to improve performance and how to prevent serious performance issues.

Programme Format:

1.During each highly interactive workshop, you will learn and practise skills that you will be able to take into your work environment and apply immediately. There will be a theoretical base along with practical exercises.
2.After each workshop you'll have a number of actions to implement using the skills learnt in that workshop, and have the opportunity to report back to your colleagues at the next workshop.
3.The programme will provide invaluable opportunities for you to get to know other people in a similar situation and share the experience of being a new people manager.
4.The facilitative style of this programme allows individuals to develop critical thinking, and to take personal responsibility for their own learning in a highly supportive environment.
5.There is a half-day workshop to complete the programme where participants can invite their own manager along to share what they have learnt and celebrate their completion of the programme.
6.A one-on-one coaching session for each participant will be offered a month after completing the programme. You will get to discuss how to integrate what you have learnt into your role as a people manager.

Teacher:
Trish Stonestreet is a director of Maygrove Management Services.

Offering over 20 years experience as a facilitator and a people manager, she also uses her extensive training in accelerated learning and neuro-linguistics to ensure that her training programmes utilise the latest techniques in learning and development-making it enjoyable and easy to learn and integrate.

Her deep abiding belief is that there is no right way to be a people manager. It's critical that whatever strategies and tools you choose to take on board are in integrity with your own management style.

Management in Action has been running at Victoria University for four years and is revised every year to ensure it delivers what new people managers most need:

•simple, practical, real-world tools to test
•a safe environment to practice them in
•high quality feedback and support from peers.
