Overview: The year 2014 marks the 70th anniversary of the battle of Monte Cassino, one of the bloodiest fights in the Italian campaign. To commemorate that pivotal military event, this course analyses the representation episodes in World War Two, the Italian Resistance and the Liberation through a series of Italian and New Zealand films. It looks in particular at the consequences of the war on the civilian population through the following films: •Vittorio De Sica’s La Ciociara (1960, released in English as Two Women) •the persecution of the Jews in Vittorio De Sica’s Il Giardino dei Finzi-Contini (1970, released in English as The Garden of the Finzi-Contini) •the Nazi occupation and the role of the Italian Resistance in Roberto Rossellini’s Roma città aperta (1945, released in English as Rome, Open City) and Guido Chiesa’s Il partigiano Johnny (2000, released with English subtitles as Johnny the Partisan) •the New Zealand soldiers’ experience in Italy in Gaylene Preston’s Home by Christmas (2010).
Target audience: All the films are available either in English or with English subtitles, so the course will appeal not only to people who know the Italian language but to lovers of Italian culture, films and history in general.
Learning objectives: By the end of this course, participants will have gained: •knowledge of a crucial historical period for Italy, going beyond the official history •an insight into contemporary Italian society.
