This workshop will discuss the process of drawing conclusions from statistical information, including descriptive statistics and graphical summaries. It will also include interpreting results from time series data, demographic information to draw conclusions, and describing and justifying the use of a descriptive statistical procedure to answer a specific policy question.
This course can be attended as a stand-alone workshop or as part of the National Certificate of Official Statistics relating to the Unit standard 23268 Interpret and draw conclusions from descriptive statistical information in a public sector context.
Who Should Attend: This workshop is designed for people employed in the Public Sector in positions where they are required to interpret statistical data to make and/or report decisions.
Learning Objectives: * Calculate and interpret results from data collections for a public sector project Interpret results from time series variables for a project in a public sector context * Interpret results from demographic information for a public sector project * Describe and justify the use of a descriptive statistical procedure to answer a specific policy question.
Course Outline: 1. Calculating and interpreting results for a project * Analysis and interpretation using summary statistics and graphics for numerical and/or categorical variables e.g. Frequency and Contingency tables, Averages, Measures of spread, Correlation, Simple linear regression, Bar charts, Histograms, Scatterplots. * Drawing conclusions from the analysis of relevant statistical information. 2.Interpreting results from time series data * Time series data e.g. actual, seasonally adjusted, deflated and Index numbers. * Time series components i.e. trend, seasonal, and irregular. * Conclusions are drawn from the time series data and their components. 3. Interpreting results from Demographic information * Calculating and interpreting standardised rates and/or odds ratios * Drawing conclusions from the interpreted statistics 4. Describing the appropriate use of descriptive statistical procedures * Indentifying a descriptive statistical procedure to answer a specific policy question * Justifying the fitness of purpose of the descriptive statistical procedure based on features of the data collection.
Course Format: This is an interactive two-day workshop. It forms part of the National Certificate in Official Statistics but can also be attended as a stand-alone workshop.
