Pronunciation issues can contribute to communication problems between ESOL speakers and people they work with. This 8-week course takes a look at the main issues. It focuses on awareness raising and on communication strategies. Participants can expect to be working with others from different ethnic groups with a range of pronunciation needs.
Who Should Attend: This course is designed for migrants and ESOL speakers who are currently in an English speaking workplace.
Course Objectives: * Understand the main features of English pronunciation. Start to identify problem areas. * Be motivated to practice target stress patterns and sounds. * Explore strategies for improving communication in the workplace.
Course Outline: In common workplace language contexts such as: * Making small talk * Explaining * Giving and justifying opinions * Telephoning * Making requests * Participating at meetings
we look at: * Word and sentence stress * Sounds of English * Intonation * Coping and learning strategies
Course Format: This is an 8-week course with 1 and a 1/2 hour workshop sessions over lunchtimes. Sessions involve short interactive listening and speaking activities with a clear focus on pronunciation.

Prue Walker has an MA in Applied Linguistics and has taught language skills for ESOL learners at Victoria University and other tertiary institutions for several years. She is now a freelance English language teacher who teaches academic and workplace English for groups and individuals. She aims to teach targeted courses with a learner-based focus.
