Nonfiction is sometimes called "the fourth genre" or the literature of reality. The term "creative nonfiction" refers to any kind of nonfiction writing that uses the techniques of narrative fiction. In practice, this tends to mean the memoir, the personal essay, the biographical sketch, travel writing and other kinds of prose lifewriting. In this course you will be able to focus on a specific area of interest and receive guidance in the particular issues associated with nonfiction writing.
Target Audience: This course will appeal to anyone interested in writing nonfiction in a creative or narrative way.
Learning Objectives: By the end of this course, students will have: * developed pieces of their own writing * improved their ability to critique their own work and that of others * gained skills in writing creative nonfiction.
Course Outline: The three sessions will involve discussions, directed writing practices and the workshopping of assignments, including: * warm-up and workshop exercises * memoir, travel and personal essay exercises * creative nonfiction and what it is * shaking up language * individual sessions with the teacher.
Course Format: This is a three-day, hands-on course held on consecutive Saturdays. It includes "homework" to be undertaken between each session. Morning and afternoon tea will be provided. Participants will need to bring their own lunch or can purchase it at nearby food outlets.

Harry Ricketts is Associate Professor of English at Victoria University. He teaches the Creative Nonfiction Workshop at Victoria's International Institute of Modern Letters and is co-editor of New Zealand Books. His publications include biographies, short stories and poetry.
Class Limit: This course is limited to a maximum of 12 participants. Places are limited, so please enrol early.
