Overview:
Do you need to summarise documents and synthesise material from multiple sources when you write reports, reviews or recommendations?

This course shows how to uncover and summarise the key ideas and connecting themes from sources, and synthesise them in your writing, according to the needs of your audience.

Who Should Attend:
This course is designed for public or private sector policy analysts, librarians, researchers or information specialists.

Course Objectives:
* Examine the task to develop an organising principle for your writing Extract key ideas from available sources
* Write an executive summary of one of the sources
* Refine your organising principle according to what the sources reveal
* Select and connect key ideas in a new text, according to the task, the organising principle and your own emerging view
* Review and revise your text

Course Outline:
HOW TEXTS WORK
* Exploring the communicative demands of a writing task
* Deciding on a possible theme and structure for the new piece
* Examining the structure of source texts to expose key ideas
* Writing a summary

WRITING A SYNTHESIS
* Revising your proposed theme and structure in light of the ideas in the source texts
* Selecting key ideas from the source texts to fit your theme
* Connecting the information to fit your proposed structure
* Developing a set of criteria for reviewing and revising

Course Format:
This one-day course is taught in an interactive workshop style allowing plenty of opportunities to practise the techniques learned.
The course has a maximum of 16 participants.

Robin Cohen has been a tutor in writing at Victoria University for 12 years. She is a qualified teacher with a special interest in the acquisition and practice of writing in all sectors of the community.
Robin�s MA research examined reading and writing from multiple texts, and her PhD explored the relationship between critical thinking and writing tasks.
