This course offers practical tips and principles for writing promotional documents, such as press releases, articles, brochures and posters. It examines the relationships between written copy, design, and document format in both print and digital media.

Who Should Attend:
This course is designed for professionals who have just entered the marketing/publicity field and want to polish their skills in writing and presentation, and those wanting to provide freelance copywriting services.

Course Objectives:
* Write the content for press releases, newsletter articles, brochures and posters
* Understand the basic design and layout considerations for major publicity documents, such as brochures and posters
* Understand the difference between digital and print publicity materials and make informed decisions regarding both

Course Outline:
Planning the document
* Audience analysis for advertising and public relations purposes
* Types of documents aimed at publicity and their functions

Differences and similarities between print and digital documents

* Screen and paper-based information processing
* Scanning, scrolling and navigation issues in document design

Document types
* The press release: selecting and organising information, effective sentence structure and integration of quotations
* The brochure: sectioning, summarising information and listing points
* The poster: prioritising information, highlighting points and using effective visuals
* The newsletter: organisation principles, content selection and wording

Fundamentals of layout and design

* The role of visuals in communicating messages: working with image, colour and words
* Page layout considerations

Course Format:
This is a hands-on workshop which will familiarise you with techniques and principles of promotional writing and will offer you the opportunity to bounce ideas, ask questions regarding your own projects and interact with peers.
There will be a maximum of 16 people attending.

Sky Marsen is Senior Lecturer in the School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies at Victoria University. She delivers courses in writing and communication for business, journalism and academic purposes. She is the author of two relevant books, Professional Writing and Communication Studies.
