Overview: Would your business survive a major event? – Business Continuity Planning is an essential management tool to ensure that your business can continue to function during major disruptions and maintain a resilient position in its marketplace. Over the past 12 months, we have all been exposed to a series of major disasters in New Zealand and overseas -the Christchurch earthquake, Pike River coal mine tragedy, Queensland floods, and the Tsunami in Japan.. While the main focus of the media is on survivor stories at the personal level, there are also very serious consequences at business level when these events occur. For businesses to survive a major interruption to their activities, it is essential for business managers to assess the key potential risks to their business, possible impact, and options for ensuring that their business is sustainable. Business continuity planning (sometimes called “disaster planning”) is a structured approach that incorporates good management practice to ensure that the key parts of an organisation will be able to secure essential functions as an emergency response, continue to maintain operations and build towards a full recovery.
