An in-depth look at the origins of ancient Egypt from the burgeoning power of the earliest kings to the unsurpassed grandeur of the age of pyramids. In a series of six seminars you will learn about the social, political and military histories of the world's first nation state, alongside their artistic, architectural, and technological achievements.
This is the first in a series of three courses that cover the chronological history of Ancient Egypt. The series will be an excellent background for our proposed Egypt study tour in early 2012.
Target Audience: This course will be of interest to anyone who is enthusiastic about ancient history, classics and/or archaeology.
Learning Objectives: By the end of this course students will have: * gained an in-depth overview of the first major period of ancient Egyptian history * an understanding of the internal and international politics that impacted on ancient Egypt * gained insight into social and religious developments during the Early Dynastic and Old Kingdoms * developed an appreciation of the art, architecture and technology of the period.
Course Outline: All six seminars will present an overview of the history and archaeology of ancient Egypt, with each seminar focusing on a particular period:
1. The Predynastic Period - the origins of the ancient Egyptian state 2. The Early Dynastic - the first kings of Egypt 3. The 3rd Dynasty - the beginnings of monumentalism 4. The 4th Dynasty - the great pyramid age 5. The 5th Dynasty - the rise of the sun god 6. The 6th Dynasty - the decline of the Old Kingdom
Course Format: This series of two-hour lectures is held one evening a week, over six weeks.
